Introducing our next artist feature from The Yorkshire Great GeXchange, @yelsk67! 💚👇 “My current practice focuses on painting totemic representations of words through shamanic calligraphy. I’ve stripped my palette down to three powerful colours; red, white and black. They remind me of cave paintings, tribal carvings, and totem poles, ancient practices filled with mystery and symbolism. For me, they represent the primal forces of birth, life and death. Using them feels like painting with earth, fire, blood, bone, water and air to bring words to life. This simplicity frees me to focus on form and movement in my intuitive reactions to a word or phrase, allowing me to play and experiment with the shape and essence of words. As I paint, I feel I’m moving through a kind of ritual; meditating on the shadows at the back of Plato’s cave, perhaps daring to peek over my shoulder at the reality behind them. The finished piece becomes a shamanic talisman, created from the spirits within the words and my own body and soul. A constant theme is the power behind words, their energy and influence, spoken, written or thought. My paintings are an intuitive response to that force, exploring meaning through shape, form and mood. Influences come from global artistic traditions and early British forms like spiral-making. I’m especially drawn to the universality of symbols across cultures, seeking a shared ancestral language of the cave at humanity’s dawn. The inspiration behind my Yorkshire themed sketch was the ancient Brigantes tribe. The Romans called this region Brigantia, after the tribe and their goddess. The stone heads at the top echo Celtic carvings found across Brigantia, and the stylised horse head below comes from a Brigantes bridle bit. I am primarily a crochet artist and low waste crafter, I make a range of things all with the intention of recycling and reusing materials that were either donated or bought secondhand. My work can be found @rhedoesart 💕 My Yorkshire themed piece is a study of some super old photographs I found online of Sheffield Town Hall, when it was first built in 1897. Our next featured artist from our Yorkshire Great GeXchange @freyjatattoo, Yorkshire based tattooist and general creative soul! What was the inspiration behind her fantastic contribution to the book? Well take a read below 👇 "I’d say I’m a woman of many hobbies/styles. I want to try my hand at everything but there’s not enough time in the day. I have been creating with all kinds of media for as long as I can remember. Everything I do I strive for perfection and one thing that keeps me going are my little tea breaks (even if I forget about my cup of tea nearly every time and have to make another 👀). Yorkshire Tea is such a staple in many homes and I wanted to combine everyone’s shared love of tea with another love of mine, the abundance of nature in Yorkshire. Me and my partner, Kieran love taking our dogs for local walks. We are surrounded by fields and trees where we live. This gave birth to the idea of a teapot & teacup made from plants." Next up for our GeXchange Takeover is the talented @scorchedbones_ This is what he had about his contribution to the Yorkshire Great GeXchange Book and his practice! "I’m Kieran, I’m 30 years old from and was born and raised in Yorkshire. I have always enjoyed being creative, from drawing and making models from a young age to playing drums and creating my own clothing brand. I have always enjoyed creating darker style work and thoroughly enjoy being able to get creative with a subject and push it as much as possible. I had come up with the idea of drawing the Barghest after reading up on it a couple of years ago. I felt it suited my style and gave me that excitement to really make it dark and creepy looking. For those who don’t know, the Barghest is a spectral black dog or monstrous hound that serves as an omen of death. Legend says it stalks the moors and narrow lanes, late at night. I felt this give me the groundwork to really use a lot of black and dark shades of grey to create the piece." Such a dark and mystical creature, don't you think? Today begins our artist features from our most recent Great GeXchange! First up we have the wonderful @handmadebyhewis E Hewis took part in our Yorkshire Great GeXchange and is a Yorkshire based artist. When we approached them about this feature, this is what they had to say about their practice and contribution to the book! "I'm a 19 year old mixed media artist based in West Yorkshire. My favourite mediums to use are watercolours and acrylic markers. I also enjoy incorporating textiles elements to my work such as embroidery and am currently studying on a fashion design course. Like art connects people, food also connects people so I decided to express this within my piece. I have used watercolour and fineliners to paint various foods and drinks that are made in or commonly eaten in Yorkshire. Hopefully people may recognise some of these and this is an enjoyable and exciting piece to start the book." We can't agree more, it's a delicious way to start the sketchbook! So smooooooottthhhhh! 👀💚 For those who have no idea what this is, it's a photograph of our super smooth, bright white, Freestyle hybrid paper (found within a Freestyle Sketchbook). And what is that pen?! Well, that is a thick tipped paint marker and it's certainly flowing onto that page! Why is this so ground breaking, we hear you ask. Well... this paper type has been made especially for paint markers, and its so good at it that it avoids that annoying pen grab, paper pluck and ink bleed through to the other side of the paper. Fun fact, we did a test and found that we were able to layer the pen over 50 times (well in all honestly we got bored and wanted to go and watch some videos of people doodling...) 💚 Are you a paint marker sketcher? You may have seen this little detail on the back of your Artgecko Sketchbook, but what actually is it? Well, this little stamp is a footprint stamp of approval and is found on the middle bottom of the back of your Artgecko Sketchbook. This means that we have quality checked the book and approve it to be sent out to you to create your next projects inside! Every footprint is the same - a little Gecko footprint indent into the back cover, however Freestyles have a special shiny one, because it's a rather special book in our opinion!
