Autumn is the perfect time to get your sketchbook out and capture nature’s beauty, and the right techniques can really make your drawings stand out! Here’s a breakdown of some fantastic methods that will take your observational sketches to the next level. ✏️🍂 Circulism: Draw tiny overlapping circles, almost like loose scribbles, to create soft, flowing textures. This is great for organic forms like leaves, clouds, or skin. The more layers you add, the darker and richer the texture becomes—ideal for avoiding harsh lines and giving your sketch a natural look. Hatching: This technique uses closely spaced parallel lines to create shading. The closer the lines, the darker the shading appears. Hatching is perfect for building depth in curved surfaces like branches or stones. You can easily control the intensity by adjusting line spacing. Cross-Hatching: Take hatching a step further by layering lines at different angles. Cross-hatching is brilliant for adding deep shadows and rich textures, making it perfect for sketching rough surfaces like tree bark, rocks, or fur. Her piece is called "The Macabre" and was created in the Storm Grey section, found within the Mixed Papers Shady Gecko Sketchbook 🦎 We asked Amy what inspired her to create this artwork and she explained: "I don't actually have a lot of hobbies, more a vibe that leads to collecting, homemaking, creating, and so on. I love to read and stargaze, I find the universe fascinating and the magick that comes with it. The feather and flower represent my collecting of pretty things, I actually have a jar of feathers collected over the years. I love candles and the atmosphere they create, and for those who know me or have visited my Insta page, I really enjoy drawing skulls! There's something about a skull - it's a piece of someone, a story, a memory in physical form, and that fascinates me. I love the anatomy of them, they're so enjoyable to draw, and when I imagined all of those things together, this was the result." Here's how to do that with your sketchbook: ✅ Doodle Everywhere: Scribble outside the lines, in the margins. Let loose! ✅ Use Weird Media Choices: Draw with coffee, makeup, or whatever random materials you’ve got lying around. ✅ Spontaneous Sketches: Draw whatever comes to mind, no planning allowed. Just go with the flow. ✅ Mess Up on Purpose: Add silly moustaches or graffiti to your finished pieces. ✅ Create Chaos: Make a page in your sketchbook that’s loud, messy, and anti-aesthetic. ✅ Mix It Up: Blend styles or media types that don’t usually go together. Absolutely breath-taking work by @pamela.goodchild who created this in The Great GeXchange Round 2 💚 This piece was created in the Desert sand section of the sketchbook and Pamela's media of choice was coloured crayons. Pamela was an illustrator but is now a portrait artist, and what a talent she has! When we asked her about the piece she said, "My inspiration was my daughter's wedding. ‘Tokyo Drifter’ by @rutheternal created with Prismacolour pencils. Interestingly for this Great GeXchange, we allowed our artists to pick what coloured paper they wanted to draw on. This is because the book that we chose to do this version of the project in was the Mixed Shades Shady Sketchbook that include four different paper colours! This meant that the order that the artists appear in this book, do not chronologically correlate to the order that they received the book in. Here is a brilliant example - @rutheternal was our last artist, however she actually appears first in the book! What a way to start the book off too with this mega slick and colourful car piece. Ruth explains, "as the subject for the project was ‘Hobbies’, my hobby as such is going to car shows, I love cars…The vehicles, the venues, and occasionally the people! I am inspired by cool shots of cars, and chose to recreate one that isn’t my car…" So so so good!! Here are a couple more photographs of THE MIGHTY GREAT GEXCHANGE SKETCHBOOK! 🙌 The first photograph features work by the legendary @lazyobit who has named his piece "My Natural State" and describes it as; "There's a representation of myself in the one man tent at night with my toes poking out that's purposefully unclear as to whether it's a perfect snooze or a head buried hiding. No other people around, which I prefer whilst hiking/camping, but everything is characterised as if it has a personality, an emotion and capability for a conscious interaction with myself. Most are happy and express happiness to me but not all of them. Are they lulling me to sleep and proudly watching over me or happy and smug they have put me into hiding? Again, it's purposefully unclear and open to interpret by the viewer."
